Nine Mens Morris
The game of Nine Mens Morris is for two players and is played on a Morris board.
The object of the game is to place the playing pieces so as to create runs of three along the marked intersections of the playing board. Both players have nine counters of the same colour set up in a line alongside the edge of the board.
Players alternate in placing one of their pieces on an intersection of the playing board in an attempt to create a line of three adjacent pieces. This attempt is known as a 'Mill'. Mills can be created horizontally and vertically, however this cannot be done diagonally.
Once a player has completed a line of three known as closing a 'Mill' , he/she may then remove one of his/her opponents pieces from the Nine Mens Morris board providing it is not already part of a closed 'Mill'. Any removed pieces cannot come back into play.
Players continue to take turns one move at a time along the lines, also continuing to make Mills in order to reduce their opponents chance of doing the same by removing their playing pieces. By using advanced tactics players can quickly demolish their opponents chances by building a double Mill'. A double 'Mill' is an arrangement of pieces in which moving only one piece opens one 'Mill' but simultaneously closes another next to it.
A player who has only three pieces remaining is allowed to jump on any desired intersection on the board. In order to win you must decrease the number of your opponents pieces down to two or force him/her into into a position where he/she cannot move.
